The Typhoon Tragedy

By: Evelyn Hoff

This November, tragedy truly struck the world when a typhoon hit the central Philippines. This massive storm, one of the largest in typhoon history, killed somewhere around 5,000 people, destroying 70 to 80 percent of everything in its path, and leaving 1.9 million people homeless. This monster of a storm was so huge that if it landed in the middle of the United States, it would affect 48 states, plus parts of Canada and Mexico. If you went to the Philippines today, you would see people in the streets who are hungry, thirsty, dirty, and mourning the deaths of their loved ones. People are drinking dirty water in order to survive and the food supply is scarce. Life for thousands has become a living nightmare. Some towns may never fully recover from the damage that was done to them. The economic cost of this crisis is estimated to be somewhere around $15 billion. For all of these reasons, until the country is able to repair itself, please pray for the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan.  Also, you can give to various organizations that are providing relief, like the American Red Cross.
