Oregon Man Charged with Harassment to Theater Shooting Victims’ Families

By Elizabeth Fernandez

On April 10, an Oregon man with a history of mental distress was arrested on suspicion of harassing the family members of some of the 12 people who were murdered by a gunman at a Colorado movie theater last summer. His name is Kevin Michael Purfield, 45, of Oregon. He is being accused of contacting the relatives of the victims through emails, phone calls, and various social media networks, Portland police said.

Sergeant Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau said he had little information about the background of Kevin Purfield, not including the fact that law enforcement had previously dealt with the suspect, including at least one “mental health call.” A spokesman for Aurora, Colorado police said that Kevin Purfield’s calls and other contacts with the victims’ families added up to dozens and began with him offering multiple conspiracies about the devastating massacre.

A Facebook page belonging to Purfield stated that some of the victims’ coffins were empty, and there were also discussions about the Sandy Hook shooting. The midnight show for “The Dark Knight Rises” left 12 people killed and 58 wounded on July 20, 2012. Purfield was jailed for “ongoing harassment” in lieu of a $10,000 bond and is supposed to appear in Multnomah County Court on April 11. His case will be tried in Portland, Oregon.

Gun Control

By Mike Ravas

This is the most debatable topic you can find on the news today. “We need to ban any and all guns that make Americans happy.” That is basically what the government is trying to do. Now, don’t get me wrong, some things I do agree with like having mental background checks before someone buys a gun. I understand and agree with that part. What I don’t agree with, though, is the fact that you are trying to take away assault rifles way from American people.

I believe that every American has a god given right to own and assault rifle just like it states in the second amendment that every American has the right to bear arms. Now, not everyone should be allowed to use an assault rifle especially people with mental disabilities, but normal gun-loving Americans should be allowed to own something that they feel would look good in their collection. The government is trying to be like “Big Brother” watching over our every move and trying to control us. Well, this is a direct message to the government from me: stop trying to control us and let us have free will that our ancestors fought to give to us.

The Importance of Studying

By Michael Ravas

Studying… everyone hates to do it, but in the long run does it actually help you? Let me give you a first hand experience of how studying might help me make honor roll for the 3rd quarter. For my science this year I took anatomy and physiology. It is one of the hardest classes you will ever take in your life. So I have had a C all throughout this quarter but I recently had a test that could push me over the 85% barrier and I knew this was my last chance for me to get a B. So I hit the books and studied and studied and studied until I knew everything I needed to know for the test. What was the final result for the hard work, a 91% and my grade jumped up to a 87% and now I will have a B for this quarter. So when you think studying may never help you, but when I studied for this test, it helped my grade tremendously.

Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2013

By Rachael Cummings

St. Patrick’s Day as we all know, is a festive and fun celebration! All over the country many states, major cities and even small towns celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Pittsburgh loves its St. Patrick Day Parade. Chilly temperatures and drizzle didn’t stop thousands of people from heading downtown, regardless of their ethnic background. This year Pittsburgh celebrated the holiday like they always do with Pittsburgh’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It is a free parade — to celebrate the freedom to be Irish and to celebrate the holiday to it’s fullest. Music, floats, and festively decorated people fill the streets and thousands of people flock to the city to see the massive event. It’s the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the country. And it attracts people from all around and even those outside of Pittsburgh. It’s a lot of fun. It’s Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. A fun filled time that continued its nearly 150-year tradition this past Saturday, March 16th 2013.
